The 2R + T rule: why stair comfort is a formula
Some stairs feel effortless. Others technically pass code and still make you stumble on the third step. The difference usually isn't the riser or the tread alone. It's their relationship, and it was quantified in 1675.
Blondel's observation
François Blondel, director of the French royal academy of architecture, measured how people actually walk: a comfortable level stride is roughly 24-26 inches (he used 24 French inches, ~25.6″ modern). His insight was that climbing trades stride length for lift at a 2-to-1 rate. Every inch of vertical rise costs about two inches of horizontal stride. Hence:
2 × Riser + Tread = 24-26″ (61-66 cm)
A 7.5″ riser wants a 9-11″ tread (2×7.5 + 10 = 25 ✓). A shallow 6″ garden-stair riser wants a 12-14″ tread. A steep 8″ riser wants only 8-10″. But at that point you're over the IRC's 7¾″ limit anyway.
Why violations feel wrong
Gait is rhythmic and mostly unconscious. Within two steps your body locks in a cadence tuned to the stair's geometry. When 2R+T totals well above 26″, each step demands a lunge. You feel it in your hips on the way up. Below 24″, steps come too fast and short, forcing a mincing shuffle that's especially awkward descending. Neither is a code violation by itself; both are why a stair gets described as "weird" by everyone who uses it.
The rule vs the code
The IRC and Blondel constrain different things, and the comfortable zone is their intersection:

Notice the last row: at the IRC's maximum riser, the Blondel-ideal tread is already below the code minimum. That's why 7.5″/10″ has become the de facto standard residential stair. It's the steepest configuration that satisfies both constraints comfortably, and it's what the calculator targets when unconstrained.
When to bend the rule
- Outdoor and landscape stairs: strides open up outdoors; designers often use 2R+T closer to 26-27″ with low risers (5-6″) and deep treads.
- Space-starved retrofits: attic and basement stairs sometimes must run steep. Get as close to 24″ as geometry allows and prioritize the ⅜″ uniformity rule; a consistent steep stair is safer than an inconsistent comfortable one.
- Grand/monumental stairs: very wide public stairs deliberately slow people down with 26″+ totals and 6″ risers.
Alternatives you'll meet
Two other traditional checks exist: R + T = 17-18″ (simpler, slightly stricter about deep treads) and R × T = 70-75 in² (penalizes extremes hardest). All three agree in the middle of the range and disagree at the edges; 2R+T remains the one written into most architectural references, and it's the one this site checks. The rule applies per step, so it holds unchanged on stairs with landings — every flight of an U-shaped switchback is checked against the same 24-26″ band.
